Pontevedra ready to host World Triathlon Championship Finals

The Pontevedra World Triathlon championship Finals is undoubtedly one of the most important sporting events of the year and for the first time, the greatest triathlon spectacle in the world will take place in Spain. This event will take place from 20 to 24 September and Pontevedra is already prepared to welcome the best triathletes in the world.

"The city is ready for a massive influx and to organise the best World Series Grand Final ever held". This is how emphatic the Mayor of Pontevedra, Miguel Anxo Fernández Lores, was during the press conference held after the Executive Committee meeting that took place at the City Hall.

The meeting was chaired by the Mayor and the President of the Spanish Triathlon Federation, José Hidalgo. Also in attendance were the vice-president of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Rafael Domínguez, the head of the Provincial Sports Service of the Xunta de Galicia, Daniel Benavides and the president of the Galician Triathlon Federation, Javier Campos, among other authorities.

 

During the meeting they reviewed the economic contributions that each entity is making, the sponsorships agreed with the different companies, as well as some other logistical and organisational aspects that are being developed in an event that reaches an investment of approximately 2.8 million euros. However, in the words of Mayor Fernández Lores "we foresee an economic return for Pontevedra of more than 15 million euros".

The Grand Final of the World Series in Pontevedra will welcome athletes from all over the world, as representatives from at least 57 countries will participate and it will be broadcast live in more than 170 territories thanks to the signal distributed by RTVE. In Spain, the races will be televised on RTVE.es and Teledeporte.

"Pontevedra is the ideal venue to host a championship of this kind, which will not be a simple sporting event, but a macro event that as always will generate unique and different situations, and athletes know that and it is a huge incentive to come here," said Jorge Garcia, director of competitions of FETRI.
