Pontevedra takes over from Townsville after fantastic week
26 August, 2024
Three world titles for the Triarmada in the Multisport World Championships, which in 2025 will be held in Pontevedra.
The Multisport Triathlon World Championships came to an end with the transfer of the flag between the host city, Townsville, and the venue for the 2025 Championships, Pontevedra, with the World and European Duathlon Champion Emilio Martín as ambassador and bearer of the relay held in oceanic lands.
Last March, the Pontevedra Organizing Committee for the 2025 World Multisport Championships met for the first time, when the chosen dates were announced, from June 20 to 29. Following the successful hosting of the World Series Finals in 2023 and the Multisport Championship in 2019, Pontevedra is set to once again welcome athletes and spectators from around the world for an exciting week of Multisport competition.
The official website of the event is already up and running and you can check all the information at https://pontevedra.triathlon.org/.
Emilio Martin, once he has left the top level competitions, was our top coach during the competitions held in Townsville, in which Spain returns with great success in the competitions in which our Tri Armada took part.
Javier Martín, Kevin Tarek and Antonio Benito, World Champions
First was Javier Martin who won the duathlon world title in an epic race and beating in the final sprint to the great dominator of international duathlon in recent years, Frenchman Benjamin Choquert, finishing Antonio Benito in 11th place. With Javito's victory, after his great national and international season, he gets a little closer to his great idol Emilio Martín, who this time was in charge of supporting and cheering our team from the other side of the barrier.
The World Aquathlon Championships again left us another Spanish World Champion, the Castilian Kevin Tarek Viñuela, who was also accompanied on the podium by Cristian Fernandez, who was bronze. Again success for our team that once again made sound the anthem of Spain in Australian lands.
And the finishing touch was put by Antonio Benito, who is adding great successes to his record since his change of distances and who added the title of World Long Distance Champion after winning with authority to the Australian Steven Mckenna and the Belgian Louis Naeyaert.
But not only our Elite triathletes won medals, also our representatives in the World Age Group Championships won medals, as was the case of Alvaro Cabrero Gutiérrez, bronze in Aquathlon in the age group 20-24 years, and Alejandro Pareja, who won the gold medal in Cross Triathlon in the category of 30-34 years. And it is also worth mentioning the participation of our two veterans in the Aquathlon World Championship, Antoni Vila who achieved 6th place in the 60-64 age group and Francisco Gala Pla, who was 8th in the 70-74 age group.
