Pontevedra officially starts the countdown to the World Triathlon Championship Finals

The countdown officially begins for the most awaited event of the year in the world of triathlon, and undoubtedly one of the most important events in world sport, the World Triathlon Championship Finals which, for the first time, will be held in Spain, specifically in Pontevedra. The Galician city celebrated in style in a crowded town hall square with only 200 days left to see the best triathletes in the world on its streets, making it once again the epicentre of World Triathlon.

"Pontevedra will once again be a reference, will rewrite a new chapter in its history as the first city in the country to host the World Triathlon Championship Finals, an event that can bring more than 10,000 people," said Miguel Anxo Fernandez Lores, Mayor of Pontevedra.

"Furthermore, the mayor stressed that "today we are going to raise a flag that 10 years ago we would not have dreamed of doing it, but we were able to move forward as a city, we were able to be a reference, something that opens doors to the world. This event is a reward that has made possible the joint work, the work between institutions, sports technicians, day-to-day workers, municipal bodies...".

The event, which was attended by all the political institutions, was also attended by athletes including Pablo Dapena and the current paratriathlon world champion and medallist at the Tokyo Olympics, Susana Rodríguez, who was delighted with the news that Pontevedra is hosting this great event: "I am very excited to have this great World Triathlon Championship Finals for the first time in Spain and, as a Galician, I am even more excited that it is in Pontevedra. It seemed impossible to think that we would have the best triathletes in the world here, but now it is a reality and I am looking forward to the date".

The party ended with a concert by the Tanxugueiras, who delighted everyone present in the town hall square, where a scoreboard is already installed counting down the days until the big event.

The World Triathlon Championship Finals in Pontevedra will be the culmination of a historic 2023 for Spanish triathlon as our country will also host the 2023 World Triathlon Multisport Championships Ibiza from 29 April to 7 May and the Europe Triathlon Championships in Madrid from 2 to 4 June.
